HeyGuys
I was wondering what headlights you use and what features to look for beyond being waterproof.

thanks

I have a rather pricey one, but I got it for hiking. Its the Petzl myo5? It has 5 led lights and a spot light. The leds have 3 settings, high, med and low and the spot shoots about 25ft and widens and narrows. A great little light, and I use all the functions. However for night time fishing many prefer a red leds light to perserve your night vision.

I use the led lights for seeing in the cockpit and the spot for seeing land or other boats. (I also carry a large spot light that will blind a boater if they come too close)

I used Princeton Tec Quad, but it broke it after 2 years of usage. I liked it. So I think I'll go with another Princeton Tec, although I don't know any other options out there.

When it comes to turning off the headlight, some headlight, especially the el cheapos, aren't designed / programmed to be turned off with one time of pushing of the button - you'll have to push the button multiple times, depending on how the setting was. I find this to be pretty uncomfortable to use.

I prefer petzl lights but I did use a cheap headlamp from from Wally world for a year, held up great till I smashed my head on a low beam in basement and broke it. I wouldnt go drop 100 bucks on the first one you get,, can find decent ones for around 20 bucks. Just google headlamps.

Wow!! I always wondered what the red lights were for. Currently I use a ball cap with two led's in the bill from LL Bean. I also use a cheapo led lantern from Coleman to light up the cockpit area of my boat. I also have a really bright white led as a stern light and red and green lights on my bow for safety.

Lamps

Postby Dims » Mon Mar 02, 2009 6:27 am

I've had a Petzel Tikka going on 3 years that's great. Has 3 LED's and 4-5 modes w/ a red lense cover that comes down over the white LED's to change color. The red is awesome at night in the yak or slipping in to your treestand in the wee hours of the morning. About $35-$40 but very rugged. I been using Petzel headlamps for many years and may types and all very good.

Sounds like the cheap Energizer one I use. It has a bunch of settings & 1 button. Plenty of light output depending on the mode and has red too. So far so good, but the button pushing can get old if you need it on red quick and miss the first time around.

Thanks guys
I wasn't sure if I would need to get on with red lenses to preserve night vision. Probably a smart move to start basic since there is always a chance of losing it.

River Rock K2 3 AA Headlight

Postby striperslayer » Mon Mar 02, 2009 8:59 pm

River Rock K2 3 AA Headlight is not bad at all for the money. Mine has been bulletproof so far. It beats anything else that I have used.

Petzel's do the job and are fairly cheap. My $25 one lasted three seasons until the salt finally worked its magic.
