How about some general information about the event. What are the locations or location for the event? Alternate lodging recommendations (esp. for us kayak trailer guys) Does everyone launch from the same location? What hours do the participants fish? Are the kayaks left unattended during non-fishing hours or do they get brought back to where the person is staying? Are all kayaks welcome including powered? Any other questions or answers would be helpful, past shenanigans, basically any thing that would give a first time angler a better idea of what happens (do I need to wear a cup ) Perhaps a sticky could be posted that stays at the top with this information

Thanks Joe, now we're getting somewhere. Part of the reason I was looking for more information is highlighted in red in your post. It makes it tough for us first timers to try and make plans, and as the event gets closer I am sure the options will be limited. I am really looking forward to this and want to get all my arrangements made so I no longer worry about the how, where and whens. I am not that far away; but am not sure I would want to commute and the more details available like the hours of fishing make a big difference in my decisions.

You can fish from Friday evening til Sunday afternoon anywhere from Boston Harbor to the merrimac River. Just show up at the BBQ at Salem Willows on Sunday around noon.

Now that eases allot of my concerns about lodging.

Plenty of nice rocks in the sound to pitch a tent. There are a few hotels very close to winter island....Hawthorne hotel...clipper ship inn.....salem waterfront hotel. Go a city over and your options open up even more. These hotels I mention are no more than a half to a mile away from W.I.

I will have to double check but I am pretty sure that the rule is, you can fish anywhere within a 30 mile radius of Winter Is in Salem. You need to pick up you Bag and Identifier Friday afternoon/evening before you fish and be back at Winter Is on Sunday morning to register if you have fish pictures. Registered fish need to be photographed with the identifier in the picture and released alive.
If I want to fish to compete I usually fish my home areas around Hull, the last cou[ple of years it's been more about hanging out and visiting at Winter Is.

Is this tournament "rookie friendly"? My son and I are just getting into salt kayak fishing and thought that this might be fun. Most likely we would not spend the night and "commute" from our house. Never having fished a tournament, how serious is the event? As long as you use common sense and common courtesy, are newbies welcome along with those that have been out there since the Mayflower first showed up? Don't want to step on anyones toes.
Thanks, Jeff

tournaments are about getting everyone on the water. If you are a newbie, show up at winter island and start asking questions. I bet you will be able to find others to tag along with.
The tourney is only as serious as you make it, have fun!

If you show up at Winter Island, ask a few questions and then tell the person you have a camera and can you tag along? ........ I don't know of many that will refuse having their picture taken with fish and will probably coach you to a few and get your picture. Enjoy. As already stated, it is about fun.
