Hobie Wheels and the Pro-Angler

If you own a P/A and you have the Old Style Heavy Duty Cart check to make sure your crossbar is not loose. The crossbar is just tack welded into the uprights. The weight of the P/A causes the welds to crack and the cross bar can fall out. This is what happened to me after a night of fishing on DI. I never did find the crossbar.

So here is my fix.

3/8' Threaded rod, Nuts, PVC, Pool Noodle, Tape, etc

Will it Rust? Yes
Will it last? Hopefully till the end of the season
Will Hobie start fully welding the cross bars on there wheel carts?

I like the fluted design and it does have a good weight rating. Not to mention it is adjustable for different boat manufacturers. I also got my dividend back from REI and that will help. This could be my next cart.

Thanks Mike...My weld broke also...Going to Muffler shop ( Eco In Quincy )& he said he weld it back together again....Thats looks like a gd cart at REI also...Thanks ..Sul

This same thing happen to me yesterday. Its interesting that I just found this posting this evening. This was only the third trip I've taken with my pro angler. I was wondering if Monahan
Marine would weld the bar back on for me since I bought it there. Poor design by Hobie and
It should be corrected to support the pro angler customers. The pro angler was getting a lot of attention at the RI Salt water show.

I took the problem to Mike at Monahan's and he replaced the cart with a new one. I'd only used it three times. Then to fix the problem we installed a stainless steel screw strap above the bar and tightened it down so the
cones/rests will have another level of support for the weight of the P/A. You could also put a
#10 stainless screw below the cone/rests also. Anything to increase the weight bearing of the
cone/rests. The keel of the P/A should not rest on the support bar as the weight of the P/A
obviously cracks the welds.
I needed a quick fix as the bass fishing here on the cape was really hot on the week end. Caught 15 large mouths one 3.5-4.00 lbs on Saturday then got grounded by the broken cart.
Hope this cold snape won't turn off the bite.

not just a pro angle problem, 1 season of use with my Revo trashed the welds on mine. I was planning on just leaving it, but that all-thread solution looks pretty easy. thanks for the tip mrlimpet

I am glad things worked out for you Gary. The other poorly engineered piece on those carts is the adjustable stops to keep the weight off the crossbar. Has anyone been able to tighten them up enough to keep them from moving? That muffler clamp idea that Mike had is a good idea but shouldn't be needed if Hobie did it's engineering homework.

Gary Mikes idea of putting muffler clamps below the scupper stops to keep the weight off the crossbar has given me a idea.

Hitch Pins

I am going to use them to support my scupper stops to keep the weight off of my repaired crossbar. I will adjust the scupper stops on my wheels for both my P/A and my Outback and drill out a set of hitch pin holes for both hulls.
