Exposed Blank Reel Seat Question

Postby Linehaul » Thu Dec 30, 2010 11:13 pm

Hello Everyone

I am planning to build a freshwater casting rod this winter - and I am considering an exposed blank reel seat. I have a question though - is the exposed area of the blank supposed to sit flush with the opening in the reel seat? If so - how do you fit the arbors so the blank and reel seat are flush or in the right position?

Does an exposed blank reel seat really add that much to the sensitivity of the rod?

I'll probably just go with the conventional reel seat - but was wondering if anyone has any experience with these reel seats.

Thanks

I use Fuji exposed blank reel seats and like them.

Arbors are not used. The seat has to be the same ID as the blanks OD. You may not be able to get the seat in the exact position desired but the ID increments are small enough that you can get it very close. Usually less than an inch.

I build most rods with them because I like the look, not because I notice any more sensitivity. I like the fact that they are available in lots more diameters so I don't have to mess with arbors. I also like that they don't add weight because of the arbor and huge gobs of epoxy. They are also closer to the diameter of the blank and I think that they are visually more appealing.

I have built two rods with the Fuji's and also like them. On the 1st one I actually wrapped a leather shoe lace around the blank where it is exposed and built up tape arbors for the rest. The rod has been dunked several times and no sign of any leakage under the seat. The second one was almost and exact fit and I actually did a thread wrap underneath with only a thin tape arbor and it also came out very nicely.

The blank is tapered, but inside of the reel seat is not. So I'd match the ID of exposed seat to the diameter of the blank where rear end of the reel seat will be. And I'd just put a few wraps of masking tape on the blank where it needs.

Does an exposed blank reel seat really add that much to the sensitivity of the rod?

I can't tell the difference. But I've got small hand, and the seat feels nice when palming the reel.

Thanks all - sounds like it might be better to get the blank first - determine where I want the reel seat, then order the actual reel seat...I like the look of the exposed blank as well.

Happy New Year!

Here's a photo of rods that I'll be using for flounder and black sea bass from yak, and squid jigging from party boat.

Blank : 6'6" Mudhole MHX's (MB782, MB784)
Reel seat : Fuji ACS 16s, painted
Grip : Matagi (green camo), Pac Bay (b&w)
Bling : Matagi
Guides : Fuji T-KLSG, T-KWSG, T-KTSG

The rods will be matched with slower speed (4.9:1) Daiwa Zillion (TDZLN100PA).
