I do not and never have worked in a tackle shop. The name isan insulting nickname for someone who fishes to much.

The black hands thing goes away. Some tarred twine gives up its tar to your hands on the first few uses, but then it stops. Over time, the tar comes off and the cord gets the mottled grey/black look that I like.

Don't wear a white shirt the first few times you fish with it and you will be fine. It will dry out quickly and won't happen after that.

Thanks for the tip. There's no way I can fish the ocean as often as you so I wonder if leaving the finished grip in the sun and rotating it every few days would speed things up. Have you tried that ?

No one can ever fish too much so whoever connected the term "baitshop boy" with someone who is fortunate to fish often must have certainly been jealous and small minded.

The view from up here is of someone fortunate to fish often, very knowledgeable about tackle/rod building/fishing, and generous enough to share that info with everyone. All the puzzle parts fit when considering that you had a shop.
