I recommend a single unit. i went through 3 handhelds before I wised up and got a combo unit. Handhelds are never as waterproof as they should be, ff units are pretty good around water.

I just got a Lowrance Elite-5 GPS/Fishfinder after doing a lot of research. I also picked up a Navionics card at the same time for the EAST lakes and ponds. http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine ... s/Elite-5/A more reasonable priced unit is the Elite-4 which is also a GPS/Fishfinder but a smaller 3.5" screen. http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine ... s/Elite-4/Both are color but you can also drop it down to the Mark-4 which is black and white and more affordable(no 5" GPS/Fishfinder in Mark series) http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Marine ... es/Mark-4/They also both come with a DSI option but I opted out of that after doing some reading... It seems that it would be easy to see structure, but harder to see fish(tiny dots).

yeah IMO you just can't beat a combo fishfinder/gps unit on the kayak. I wouldn't screw around with a handheld

Thankss for your replies. I like that Lowrance Elite 5. Does the unit come with Transducer. I am looking for a quick install. Any good links on installation? Im hitting the Cape, Barnstable Harbor next week.

Yes it does come with a transducer and a 20' cable. The power cable is short so you will want to get some 18AWG two strand wire and an inline fuse holder with a 3AMP fuse. They do make a scupper mounted transducer dealy if you wanted to look at that. It has a base map on it but you'll want to buy a Navionics Gold / Hotmaps for it afterwards to get your contours.

If you are fishing the harbor, choose Navionics Gold. This covers the entire US seaboard. Navionics.com, click on marine and see all the details. If you fish the inland ponds and lakes, then you want HotMaps Premium.
